Plan B
February 4, 2009 by Marci
I am all about planning. I believe in the saying “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” People are rarely successful by accident. Every night before bed, I make a to-do list for the next day. On Sunday evenings, I make my schedule for the upcoming week. My schedule and lists keep me on track and organized. Without them, my family would be wearing dirty clothes half the time, our house would be filthy and we would never get a good meal!
My biggest problem is the panic that ensues when my plans didn’t go as expected. If the car breaks down and I can’t get to my to-do list, I’m usually ok as long as I can get to it the next day. But, if something comes up and I am another day behind….oh my! Panic attack!!! Then, I rush around for a Plan B. Yesterday, as I was in full panic mode, I collapsed and started reading to escape. I read a verse of scripture that made me realize that my plans were actually Plan B. I had exalted them to Plan A unwarrantedly. Proverbs 19:21 says “A man may have many plans in his heart, but the Lord’s purpose wins in the end.”
There I was, thinking that the world would come to an end if I didn’t get the floors vacuumed today or if I didn’t make it to the dollar store to buy valentine’s decorations, when I was really missing the bigger picture. While I may have plans, God has purpose. My plans need to take a backseat to what God is doing. I need to realize that maybe to fulfill His purpose, I needed to go to the tire store instead of vacuuming or spend time with my daughter at home rather than sending her to school. I learned yesterday that I have to be more flexible and submit my plans and my life to Him. The Bible says he orders our steps. I just need to learn to walk in them. There is nothing wrong with planning, as long as we realize our plans are Plan B and can be changed or put off at anytime to fulfill Plan A.

I really needed to read this one. I woke with a plan today and have been trying to stay on track, but with an infant that doesn’t always happen as “planned”. She went down for a nap, so thought I’d take a quick moment to get through my e-mails. Remembered your blog and haven’t checked it for a few days, so thought I’d take moment for ‘me’. As I was rushing through, I stumbled upon this one. What a great one! Thanks for that much needed reminder and what’s more, I wasn’t going to read it because my 3yo has just announced that the baby is awake again, but I know He really wanted me give it a few more minutes and this is what He wanted to tell me today. Thanks Marci!
