I almost missed it

March 7, 2009 by

Today was a beautiful spring-like day!  The kids played outside in short sleeves.  They rode bikes.  They blew bubbles.  They played in the sandbox.  They played in the mud.  They ran and laughed!  I almost missed it all.  You see, I had my to-do list.  It was a big list.  I had the usual morning routine planned, plus some spring cleaning.  I was so happy when the kids went out early this morning to play.  My morning was starting out great!  Then, my three year old wanted my to sit outside and watch him ride his bike.  Just sit!!  What was he thinking?  Didn’t he know I had things to do?!

Reluctantly, I stopped what I was doing and went outside.  My heart melted when he showed me the lawn chair he had pulled out for me in the sun.  I spent the rest of the morning taking pictures of the kids and blowing bubbles with them.  We went for a bike ride around the neighborhood and had snacks outside.  I had a great, unplanned time with the kids today.

Plans are great when they are used as tools to make sure we get the details of life taken care of, but when they actually make us BUSY they just aren’t worth sticking to.  Have you ever heard the saying “Life is what happens while you are busy making plans”?  So true….. Don’t miss it!

Yes, yes, yes!!! I really struggle with this because I’m very much on the task-oriented side of the spectrum as opposed to the people-oriented side. I like to be busy and get things done.

But yesterday was a GORGEOUS day here as well (actually, I just looked at the thermometer, and it’s still 64 out this morning – woohoo!), and I kept my oldest up from nap to read with her on the porch swing and then we played soccer in the afternoon, and those are things that matter in life. It’s hard for me to think about how many of those moments I’ve missed out on in my quest to get things done!

What a sweet and factual matter you mention in these 3 short paragraphs. It made my eyes start to “sweat”! I know what you mean –the things mommy’s have to juggle and make decisions doing…defining the importance of life.
