Spring cleaning – update
March 11, 2009 by Marci
One of the reasons I wrote an earlier post about Spring Cleaning was to motivate myself to get it done. I knew that if I told someone I was going to do it, it would happen. I gave myself to the end of March to finish. My thought process is everything in babysteps. Cut everything into small, do-able chuncks of time. I don’t want to halt my life for a week while I clean. So, how did my first week go?
LOL!!! This really does make me laugh when I think about it. Over the past week, I spent 1 hour and 15 minutes spring cleaning my kitchen. That’s it! Is it done? Nope. Do I care? Nope. I still cleaned and de-cluttered my house as usual throughout the week. I just didn’t get to much “spring cleaning”. Even though I didn’t spend much time on my spring cleaning, here is what I got accomplished:
- knocked down cobwebs from corners
- cleaned light fixtures
- wiped down cabinets and appliances
- washed inside of windows
- cleaned inside of appliances (except for fridge)
- cleaned microwave vent
- wiped down chairs and table legs
- scrubs and sanitized sink
Not so bad for 75 minutes of work! It doesn’t take long to get things done when you are focused. Today, I will clean out the fridge. I already cleaned and organized the cabinets in January, so I am crossing that off my list. Almost finished with the kitchen! Then, it will be on to the next area. I haven’t decided where that will be yet. My goal this week is to devote a little more time and see what I can accomplish to report next week.
Let me know how your spring cleaning is going and share any tips you have.

You have inspired me; it sounds crazy but I love to spring clean; it is the organizing that I don’t like! I just wish the weather was more like spring; that really gets me in the mood to clean and air out the house!!
I’m glad to hear that your accomplishments are not so grand as your plans — it makes me feel better that I haven’t done much. Every surface in the upstairs bathroom has been cleaned – to include wiping down the walls, and washing the baseboards. I keep planning on getting to the toyroom but find endless reasons to not. The week is only half done and I have a sleepover birthday party in 9 days – perhaps that will motivate me tomorrow!
Sometimes I invite friends over to get me in gear to clean when I am having a hard time with self-motivation. I think the sleepover is perfect timing!
Woo Hoo! The toyroom is done!!! The biggest hiccup is the cat had urinated on the futon mattress. The girls and I have reduced by 2 large leaf bags of stuff to goodwill, a couple of garbage bags, a dollhouse (we had 2), baby stroller, and an old footlocker are also going to goodwill. I may post the pix tomorrow on my blog. Thanks for the inspiration. Now, onto my littlest girl’s room.
You are awesome!!! The toyroom will be my last stop, I believe. I will have to get really motivated!
After reading a few of your posts, I have come to the realization that my Spring cleaning began in January with one of my resolutions to recover this home from clutter. So far, I’ve decluttered my kitchen, laundry room, two bathrooms and the toyroom. The toyroom was high up on the list of priorities as I plan to throw 6 nine year olds, and 4 seven year olds in the toyroom for my oldest’s sleepover birthday party this weekend. Thanks again for the encouragement and the perspective.
