Thoughts about this blog

April 28, 2009 by

When I started this blog a couple months ago, I had no idea what I was doing.  Truthfully, I still don’t.  I just knew I had a burden on my heart for people, moms in particular, who had given in to the lie that we have to bury ourselves in activity to be seen as a success.  So many people live by the rule that “he who dies with the fullest schedule wins”, but in the end, is that really what matters?  When I would bring up this topic to friends it would inevitably start a great conversation about how our over-scheduling is ruining our lives and families.  However, no one ever seemed to know how to make it stop.  I taught a couple Bible studies on this topic and all my friends knew where I stood on this issue, but I felt I needed to let a larger audience know that it’s ok to not be perpetually busy. My thought was to write a book.  But, how long would that take?!  After praying about it for years, it occurred to me one day that a blog might be the ideal media.  I had started reading blogs and creating a personal one just for grandparents and far away friends and family.  Maybe this was what I was looking for.

With some help from my friend Gretchen at GirlsCantWhat and Thyme For Design, I dove into blogging.   Initially, I thought I would just reach my friends and maybe some of their friends.  I have been really surprised at how many people have found Overcoming Busy and have come back for more!  That is great!   Another surprise has been how many like minded individuals I have found out here in blog land.  I use the word “busy” to describe the condition that so many find us in, yet others use “clutter”.  I preach “stop over-scheduling everything”, and others say “live simply”.  This has been a wonderful experience to know that not all of us have resigned to a life of running with the herd.

My goal has never been to make money or seek notoriety.  I didn’t even know you could do those things as a blog writer!  My goal has been to share my ideas – humble, yet accurate :) - and help other mom’s relieve some of the pressures we have put on ourselves.  Where will this blog lead?  God only knows.  In the short term, I am contemplating a redesign and maybe adding some new features.

Where do you see this blog going?  What would you like to see added?  What content do you like or dislike?  Any suggestions on getting the word out that BUSY is something we need to overcome?

Hmm…I don’t have any advice for you — I like what you’ve been posting already. If you’re asking if we’d be turned off by advertising, my answer is no. I say go for it! (When I started my blog, I didn’t know that you could make money either. Now, I thinking of my options.)

I’ll try to think of more helpful answers, because I know this comment wasn’t very helpful. ; )

    Hi!

It sounds like we’ve been on similar paths, and it just happens that I was able to write a book. But my book is just a starting point for people currently in high gear. Your blog, and mine over at NotSoFastBook.com, are meant to be a helpful, ongoing resource. I’m sure this is a fantastic complement to my ministry–I’d love to see people encouraged by many avenues, including your words here at Overcoming Busy. Great title and a great concept for a blog. I’ll link to you at http://www.notsofastbook.com right now! Thanks!

Kirwin- Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. I appreciate it!

Ann- Thanks for the link! I would like to review your book on OvercomingBusy when it comes out. It would be just what my readers (and I) are looking for!

bus·y (b?z’?) Cluttered with detail to the point of being distracting: a busy design.

Busy but not productive; that IS the question?! I believe busy can become a disease. We are designed by our Creator to live life to the very fullest but if we busy ourselves to the point of overlooking the important things: our Maker, our husbands, our children, our friends, our families, and other people -whom I believe we were put here on earth to help as well- (i.e.; Relationships), then, what “on Earth” are we actually accomplishing? Whatever is not flesh & bone, whatever does not have a heart & soul…is truly NOT that important. I like the definition found above because it makes me think of our Designer, not wanting us to become cluttered or distracted by what truly matters. If what we’re doing doesn’t matter long after we’re gone, why are we even doing it??
You’re on the right path Marci! Keep asking God for wisdom and for the words to flow out to the ladies he’s put in your life ! Peace out~

I know I’m late on this one but you also know I am a new reader of yours! I am catching up.
I love your blog. Everything has been an inspiration and I also think you may be my long lost twin! LOL. We have some similar thoughts about what we want from our blogs and the way we think.
I started mine because I had a revelation. With 4 children I am very busy and I don’t want to be too busy that I feel I can’t do what God wants from me. I prayed about it and found that my love of writing (which I kept putting off all of these years) and my will to help others by inspiring and encouraging could go hand in hand. I didn’t know you could make money until I was told by another blogger. It still is not what I am doing it for. I’m giving it to God to take care of. If it’s His will, it will happen. If anything I am meeting new people and enjoying it!
As you see I need to learn a lot about blogging yet (including not writing a blog on someone else’s comments, LOL!) Sorry!
    Don’t change a thing… I love your blog!
