What do they remember?
May 13, 2009 by Marci
My daughter’s 2nd grade class invited their mom’s to a special Mother’s Day program in their classroom this week. During the program, each child read aloud a narrative they wrote about their mom. At first, I must admit, all of us moms looked at each other with a little panic in our eyes in fear of what would come out of their mouths! But, it was apparent that each one was speaking from the heart and our panicked eyes quickly turned to teary eyes.
As I listened to my daughter read, I realized again how important it is to not by overcome by the busyness of life and to live our lives experiencing what we were made for. Her entire narrative was about the things we have done together – her memories. She remembers things that I had to be reminded of. It wasn’t always the big events and activities that were important memories for her. There were lots of little things; little moments that I’d love to have back.
I thought I’d share it with you.
My mom is a great mom for many reasons. I love to do many things with my mom. I remember the one time we went to the mall and I got my ears pierced with Grandma and you watched. I bet you remember the time that you tucked me in and it was raining. You said it sounds like music. I agree with you. I remember the time we went to the mother-daughter retreat and we made bracelets, bath stuff and painted our nails. We both remember the time we went to see Dave and Sandra. We were so excited to see them. My mom is very special. She cooks for me. She packs my lunch, too. I love when you drive me to Grandma and Papa’s house. We talk and you think of fun games to play on the way. You and me have a great time when we go to Maine. You are so beautiful to me that I think you don’t need make up. I have lots of memories with my mom. I remember the time that we went on the plane and my brother cried the whole time. Do you remember the time we explored the stream? I do. I remember the time my brother was afraid of the sand at the beach. As you can see, my mom is very special to me because we have lots of fun together and I love her very much.
I can’t wait for my kids to get home from school so we can make more great memories. I don’t have anything grand planned. I don’t need to.

That is so sweet!!! I can’t wait for Jilly to remember our memories!!!
Beautiful! I definitely believe in the small things. Making memories is an awesome thing and being reminded by our young children is what we need every once in awhile! Thanks for sharing!!
How adorable.
Okay, I have teary eyes! That is so sweet – a paper to treasure forever. It is so true that the little things can make a big difference! And, I can’t wait for my little ones to tell me what is so special to them! What a perfect mother’s day gift for you! How special!
Thank you for the reminder…I knew this, truly I did, that it’s the little moments that matter most but I needed to be reminded of it. A husband out of work makes it hard to have the big moments…UNO anyone?
Beautiful blog
thnx for stopping by!! and thnx for the words of encouragement!! you will do great , too, i just know it!!
Oh, there are tears in my eyes. I too remember that special trip you took to see us. Those are memories to treasure. And what a great reminder that we don’t have to do extraordinary things to help our children make memories but just it’s the little things that we do and say that are so special to them.
And Erika, hang in there. I don’t know how old your children are but I do know that no matter what age they are it is the time you spend with them that they will remember the most. Hang onto the little moments each day brings.
