I love this old bread machine

I love gadgets and ideas that make everyday tasks more efficient.  I hate to waste time!  Now, I don’t use the time I save to cram more activities and stuff into just for the sake of keeping busy.  Spending quality time with family, friends, God and myself is more important.

My kitchen has lots of little gadgets.  Just like I like a place for everything, I like a tool for every job.  My latest favorite gadget is my bread machine.  Its not new.  Its not even mine.  My mom let me use hers a couple years ago and I still have it.  We never really liked the bread that it baked.  It always came out too dry or got dry fast.  So, we stopped using it.  A month or so ago, I really wanted to stop buying bread at the grocery store that was full of chemicals and preservatives or that cost me an arm and a leg.  I found some homemade bread recipes, but the thought of kneading the dough for 10 minutes at a time with my 4 year old trying to help didn’t really appeal to me.

Then, I discovered some recipes that used the bread machine’s dough cycle to make the dough that was to be baked in the oven.  I don’t know why, but I had never noticed the dough cycle on the machine before.  Let me tell you, that dough cycle has been wonderful!  I dump all the bread ingredients in the machine.  It mixes and kneads the dough and lets it rise.  All I have to do is take the dough out and put it in my pans and bake it.  I even made pizza dough in the bread machine tonight.  My family loved it!

Fresh baked bread is so wonderful and now so easy!  I love this old bread machine no matter whose it is!

Do you have a favorite kitchen gadget?  What is it?  What do you use it for?  How does it make your life easier?

Well put it this way, I have a sign in my kitchen that says all I serve is take out, microwave and freezer. So I guess my favorite gadget would be the microwave! LOL. No seriously, I am working on cooking more and better but still my crockpot is my favorite!! Never tried a bread maker, maybe I should look into that…I love bread!!

My favorite gadget are two: my Kitchenaid stand mixer and my Cuisinart food processor. I use my stand mixer to make cookies, make meringue pies, cakes, and to knead bread dough. I use my food processor to make fresh pesto (so much better than the store bought kind – even if you use Kraft parmesan), guacamole, boirsin cheese, salad dressing, basil mayo.

I love this posting. I have the same bread machine in my utility closet. I couldn’t even pay people to take it this winter when I was Spring cleaning. With the stand mixer , I should probably donate it to charity.

I’ve been on a similar bread kick as you. I wish I had a recipe for sandwich bread that comes out a little closer to the kind you buy in the store. My kids are tough converts when I try to give them homemade anything.

    Have a lovely day!

I would love a KitchenAid Stand Mixer!! I have asked for one for Christmas for the past 2 years. Haven’t seen it yet. We would get so much use out of it, too! The honey wheat bread I make is pretty good for sandwiches. You might want to try it and see what your girls think. My kids are picky about bread and they like it.

I have a few favorite kitchen gadgets; besides my coffee pot (couldn’t live w/out it) we use the waffle iron a lot and we have a juicer and I can juice all kinds of fruits and veggies and the kids will drink it right up; it is amazing what mixing is some fruit with veggies will do!

  4. I’ve been meaning to make my own brad but have been putting it off! You have given me the inspiration I need — Thanks! ;)

Shannon- Baking bread is not as difficult as I thought it would be – now that I have the right recipe! It makes all the difference. Get a good one your family likes and you’ll wonder why you waited so long!

  5. brad=bread — wow, long day!

Without a doubt my favorite kitchen tool is my Cuisinart food processor. I bought it two years ago to make baby food, and now I use it all the time, for chopping onions, making bread crumbs, etc. Not sure how I ever lived without it.

I am also experimenting with a bread machine. Mine is also passed down to me – from my mother-in-law. And like Miko’s girl, I would like to find a recipe that could easily be used on sandwiches.

Amy- My mom has had a food processor for years and she uses it all the time. I really don’t know why I don’t have one…is it Christmas yet?

I forgot about the coffee pot – I think of that as more of an essential than a gadget – coffee is like air for me.

Marci, I will try out your recipe. I tried one from King Arthur Flour web-site, added wheat gluten (not as much as I should), and the loaf turned out softer.

Have a nice Memorial Day weekend!
