Creative jewelry storage
May 22, 2009 by Marci

Jewelry is my weakness. If I had to choose between buying food or a beautiful piece of jewelry, I’d choose the jewelry. Someone would feed me, right?!? Its hard for me to pass up a good deal on sparkly things! I get mesmerized by the sparkle and shine. My collection of jewelry is not huge, but its pretty good.
In my collection, I have good jewelry – gold, silver and gems – and I have costume jewelry – still nice, just not made with precious metals and stones. The good jewelry has proper, safe storage, but my costume jewelry usually resides in a couple boxes in my closet. I have quite a few peices ranging from necklaces to earrings to bracelets. There is probably something for most every outfit. The problem has always been that I didn’t have visable storage for my jewelry, so I seem to wear the same pieces over and over. I have been looking for quite some time for a storage solution to fit my needs and my space. I ended up modifying an idea I saw some time ago, in different forms and from different sources. Can’t remember where! This is what I came up with.

I took a piece of styrofoam and attached this beautiful fabric with gold tipped quilting pins. (I wish the picture was better!!) The jewelry is hung by more quilting pins. This works great for necklaces, bracelets and earrings. It keeps jewelry sets together, too. I made two of these and they sitting on a shelf in my closet waiting to be hung in the wall. Actually, I need another one, but I don’t have anymore space in the closet! At some point, I am going to reattach the fabric with spray adhesive. You can probably see the bubbles from the fabric. All in all, I thought these turned out pretty good considering I had lots of help from my 8 and 4 year olds! Everyone I have showed them to thought I had art hanging in my closet when they first walked in! It helps that I do have a large walk in closet with the space to hang them. I could see these hanging in a bedroom or bathroom with with cover fabric matching the decor.
I love when organzing can be pretty, too! What pretty organizing solutions do you have?

Very cute and creative! You’re funny about choosing jewelry over food. LOL
I’ve only recently discovered Ang’s Creative Mama blog, and I love it! So many fun ideas.
Good for you!!
That is an awesome idea! I have a lot of jewelry as well (mostly hand me downs from family) but I refuse to get rid of something like that! This is a perfect fix to do something with them! Most of it is in boxes somewhere!
I LOVE this. What a great way to display your precious pieces, while not only saving $ but DIY! I have some fabric left over from my inspiration board, I do believe I now know how to use it, thanks for sharing & linking up!
C. has 3 more weeks until she can buy earrings to replace her starter earrings. Your idea looks cuter than the jewelry storage products they have at Claire’s. The plus is that we can make it together – she’s such a crafty kid. Thanks for the great idea!
Miko’s Girl- I am thinking of making one for my daughter with a mesh type ribbon for earrings with backs. That might work for your daughter, too.
