Too much time online!!!

June 24, 2009 by

Well, I’ve been sitting at my laptop for 45 minutes.  Have I written a blog post?  Have I gone over the bank statement?  Have I checked the weather?  Have I checked the library schedule?  Those are all things that I wanted to do when I sat down here.  Have I accomplished any of those goals?  No….No I haven’t.

What have I done?  Let’s see.  I did order a couple books off Amazon.  I read a lot of blog posts on my reader.  Visited a couple new blogs.  Checked my Facebook world.  Checked email.  Anything wrong with that?  I don’t think so.  But, I could be more effeicient.  I could have gotten my primary tasks that I wanted to get done finished first.  Then, I could have spent a little time reading blogs.  My timing could have been better.  My kids and I do better when we all walk through our morning routine and chores together instead of me sending them off to do it themselves while I sit here.  In the afternoon, they have quiet time, which is the time I originally sat aside to follow blogs and websites I like.

So, what am I saying here?  This post maybe just for me – just a vehicle to get my thoughts out.  I just didn’t go with our family’s routine today and now I can see I’m going to pay for it later!  One of my goals is to spend less family time online.  Not doing so well today.  A lot of people must be on the same wavelength this week,  Laura at I’m An Organizing Junkie wrote about Time Tracker in ther post about her favorite Firefox add-ons and the comment section was abuzz with folks that needed to start using it.  The Steady Mom has a great article about wasting time online with some great tips.

What are your thoughts on the subject?  While you comment, I’m going to play with the kids.  Be back later!

Hmmm, I did really good today at WORK. I read my Me and My Big Mouth from like, 9 til 1. But now I’m home and I have stuff I could be doing but what am I doing? Reading your blog. LOL I need to be washing clothes, going to the grocery store, figuring out what to feed a son who just had a tonsillectomy on Monday…So I’m not doing so well currently. And all this started out with me on Allrecipes.com looking for a recipe for hamburger Strogonaff that doesn’t have cream of onion soup because I can’t get it at the grocery store on the corner…okay, I’m going to the grocery store now. UGH!!!!

Yes, I am so so guilty!!! I have been trying hard not to be on too long. I’m working on this one!!

  3. Great post, and very timely for me! I’ve been thinking of ways to streamline my online time. Not just for the sake of being productive, but also so I can enjoy the time and not feel guilty about whittling away hours that I should be doing something else. I love the approach of making a schedule and sticking to it, and I agree that timing is so important in being good household managers. Thanks for sharing your wisdom there.

thanks for coming over and dropping a note. I can totally relate to this post. I definitely felt like I was spending too much time on the internet, wrapped up in my blog, comparing myself with others, and needed some time away, so I took some time away. I checked e-mail, but never looked up my stats, never logged in to see comments, or write anything. It was weird at first, but then refreshing by the end of the week, and I really felt like I got so much accomplished during my “week off.” And, the kids loved it. I feel my internet time is MY time, but I now realize MY time can be doing a number of things besides stressing about blogging. Thanks for sharing your feelings on the subject! Abbie
