Cereal Box Organizers For Kids’ Stuff

wfmwbannerkristenThis is my first time participating in Works For Me Wednesday at We are THAT Family.  I have been a fan for a long time and have gotten some great ideas there.  This weeks theme is organizing, so I couldn’t help myself but to jump in!  My goal is to have my whole house organized, yet livable.  I don’t want everything in labeled boxes from the office supply store or in plastic totes.  I do believe that everything should have its place, but I like to find creative solutions.

In our family, I am trying to teach the kids to be organized by coming up with places for their stuff.  My friend, Sandra, laughed at me a couple Christmases ago because 2 days after the big day, I had the new toys in bins or totes already.  All the new toys had a home!  One area that is challanging to keep organized is our art area in the toy room.  We have built in cubbies that help alot.  I keep pencils, pen, scissors and such in a turn about from Pampered Chef.  (I got a new one in black for my kitchen last year, so the old white one got repurposed.)  That takes care of stray pencils and stuff, but what about scrap paper and stickers and unfinished projects?  I wanted something streamlined that was easy to get to and not just everything thrown into a box.  I love those plastic or chipboard magazine holders or paper files, but I didn’t want to fork out the cash, so we made our own.

We used old cereal boxes.  Cut off the top and cut an angle down the sides.

We left some plain and decorated some with scrap construction paper and glue.  The kids love this part!

These new paper files work great for storing stickers, scrap paper, unfinished projects, school papers, art work…..lots of stuff.

They fit right into our cubbies and keep everything nice and neat!  These cereal box versions are much more interesting and colorful that their store bought counterparts.  The kids will use them more because they made them!

I think this might actually work in our house. My daughter’s art supplies have most definitely been overwhelming her art area! Thanks for the idea!

These would be great for home… I use them in my classroom for students to store their free choice books (I was thinking of you Niki). They are labeled with their names. How cute to decorate them! Thanks for the tip.
