My Planning Time

Starbucks 2007 Planner - Inside Page Pictures, Images and Photos

As I write this, I am in the middle of my Sunday late afternoon/evening routine – planning for the upcoming week.  This is the time I look at the family calendar, our home school lesson plan and our menu and sync them together the best I can.  I want to make sure I don’t plan a big homeschool project or outing the same day we have dentists appointments and I don’t want to plan a big involved meal the same evening we have a ball game on the schedule.  I have to make my blogging schedule work in there, also.  Planning ahead like this helps the rest of the week go so much smoother. It takes a lot of stress out of our days.  It keeps us from trying to do too much.  It keeps us balanced – for the most part.

Later this week, we’ll look at methods and ways to plan your week.

Do you have a planning time?  Or do you just fly by the seat of your pants all week?  What works for you?  Share with us…please!!!

In the mean time, I wanted to share my menu for the week.  I just got my Everyday Food magazine in the mail Saturday, so I am ready to try some new recipes this week.  The new recipes look easy and quick to prepare.  There are even a couple desserts I am going to try.  Can’t wait!!

Dinners (from Everyday Food Magazine May 2010)

Tuna Melt, fresh veggies and dip

Vegetable Pad Thai, grilled chicken

Calzones, salad

Spinach Cheddar Strata, broccoli slaw

Tacos (just our family tacos, not from any recipe)

Desserts

Raspberry Scones

Raspberry-Lemon Whoopie Pies

  1. I like to plan on Sunday night’s too. I don’t think it is a coincidence either that I sleep really well that night. I believe it is due to getting it all out of my head and on the paper. I also like to check on Wednesday and see if I need to amend it at all. Sometimes life throws us curve balls that even the most prepared list can’t handle so, I make room for revisions! Great post. :)

I love that planner in the picture. Is it yours? Where did you get it??

  3. I like to plan for the week ahead on a Sunday afternoon/evening as well! Somehow, it makes me feel a bit more ‘ready’ for Monday. ;)

I have been doing mega planning on Sunday, mostly revolving around a menu. since going gluten free, and resolving to make more foods from scratch, (well having to because everything packaged has gluten in it!!) it has been quite a process. I have been going through my Bon Appetite archives trying to balance, food groups, budgets, time, and schedules (you know not planning a labor intensive meal, or one that requires a lot of cooking time when on the days we are running errands) and composing a menu during the weekend.
I have been getting a bit bogged down in the details trying to balance all the variables. What do you do? How do you balance time between activities, the weather and other unforesee-ables?
I feel planning sets me up for the week. I can make sure we get some outside time, although this also happens on the fly when someone escapes outdoors anyway, doctor’s appointments are made, errands are accomplished, and I get some writing time in.
Unfortunately, I feel sometimes planning makes it feel like the world is whirling by at a break-neck pace. It makes me focus down on the “to-dos” so much, and it is hard to come up for air, look around, and enjoy the moment. Okay, rambling. I am interested to see what others have to say!
