Time To Think

April 13, 2011 by

A friend once told me that she scheduled time to think.

Huh?

Time to think. Time to let the mind wander uninterrupted and unfettered by the mental to-do list and stress of a schedule. Time to just be.

She told me that way back before my life got “busy”. While my one child was still young and our list of responsibilities wasn’t so long. Back then, I had time to think. Now, not so much.

I used to think big thoughts and write about them. I sought out people with the same thoughts or at least with the ability and willingness to think big and out of the box. Now, I realize why my friend used to schedule time to think.

Presently, my scheduled “free time” is used to think up blog posts, keep up with twitter and facebook or make lists for one project or another. I do get things done. I am productive. I try to not be “busy”. But, I am not thinking.  I am not doing the “big” things that are born out of “big” thoughts.

“Nothing limits achievement like small thinking; nothing expands possibilities like unleashed imagination.”  -William Arthur Ward

My small thinking is limiting me. It is limiting what I can accomplish – what God wants me to accomplish.

So, I will schedule time to think. It might be on a long walk. It might be in my comfy chair with a cup of coffee. It might be on a long drive. There will be on radio, computer or company. Just my notebook and my Bible for taking notes and as a compass for my thoughts.

What about you? Do you have time to think? Are your thoughts small or do you think big?

You bring up a REALLY good point… in the past two years I’ve been on autopilot – and like you said, thinking about the day to day things, but not the BIG stuff. When we were first married my husband and I used to go out for coffee and dinner and have discussions like that – talk about our goals, etc… It seems these days we just survive! Great post, it got me “thinking!”

  2. Awesome post and SO important! We must take time for oursleves! I wrote a post a while back on the same thing, thought I might share? Are you too busy to be yourself?
    Thanks!

  3. I’m right there with you. Free time=catching up on the blog and my book business! I definitely need some reading time/walking time and time not thinking about everything else going on in my life!
