Today I’m participating in the Ultimate Blog Swap. You’ll find me posting over at The Village Beauty about Hobbies, and I’m excited to welcome Holly Minion of Moments on our Journey.

Don’t you love beautiful things? I must confess that I love driving through historic neighbor-hoods filled with beautifully-maintained homes, and I read “Martha Stewart Living” just to see what beautiful gardens, homes, and food are exhibited on those pages. In a world that is filled with so many un-beautiful moments, we all love to surround ourselves with beautiful things. Too often, however, we find ourselves giving excuses as to why we can’t do something beautiful in our homes.

Since I live in a rental, I find it way too easy to give the excuse that I’m waiting until we own our home before I can truly make it beautiful. I’ve hear others give the excuse that they are too busy or don’t have enough money to truly make their homes beautiful. Another common excuse is “My home will never look like one of those houses in a magazine or on a blog, so why bother?” While I can relate to every single one of those excuses, I’ve learned that many times in life, when things can be so uncertain and crazy, we have to create beauty around us.

If you need a little inspiration to create beauty in your home, here are a few things to get you started:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Make your home beautiful to you. We are all created to be unique people with our own tastes and preferences. What looks beautiful to another person may seem old-fashioned or odd to someone else. Though we can draw inspiration from decor blogs or home shows, don’t forget that your home has to be beautiful for you first of all.

Beauty is in the little things. Isn’t it amazing how a simple bouquet of flowers can brighten a room? Creating beauty in your home doesn’t have to involve buying expensive furnishings or redoing your entire kitchen. Something as small as a flower arrangement or a lighted candle on your end table can make your house feel even more home-y.

Beauty is created in simple ways. Along the same lines as the tip above, beau-ty can be added by something as simple as opening your windows to allow fresh air to blow through your home. My kitchen looks beautiful to me when there are no dishes on the counter!

Beauty is manifested in a welcoming, open home. It’s been my experience that the most beautiful homes are the ones full of love and laughter. You create beauty in your home by your love for your family and others, by your smile, and by showing grace and hospitality to everyone who walks in your door. Most of us don’t live in palaces, but our guests (and family) will feel like they are in one by the beautiful atmosphere we create.

What are you going to do today to create beauty in your home? Will it be created by a vase full of flowers or creating a routine that will leave your home clean and your life more peaceful? Or maybe you will simply create it by adding a smile everywhere you go. Won’t you do something to create a little beauty in your world today?

When not cooking something or rearranging her furniture for the umpteenth time, Holly Minion blogs about organizing and time management, as well as all the crazy, wonderful little moments in life, over at Moments on our Journey.

One thing I do is put a table cloth on the table. I have a ton of them and use which ever one fits my mood. Some match the space and some have some kind of memories attached to it. Like a striped one I bought years ago that we only use on birthday’s. They just make me smile.
