Memorial Day

May 29, 2011 by

Our family stood among the graves of fallen soldiers from as far back as the civil war. We listened to prayers offered in thankfulness and in honor of these brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We watched as aging, shaking hands carefully unfolded and folded the flag that they fought for in WWII. We watched these same hands salute their brothers in arms who never made it back from battle.

I felt so small among such heroes. They fought for me and my family. They fought for all of us. How humbling.

Today, as you have your cookouts and picnics, remember the heroes. Remember those who made it back to tell the tale and those whose stories remain on the battlefield. Take time to attend a memorial service. Teach your children about those who paid the ultimate price and those who are fighting to defend freedom even as you read this.

God bless our veterans and our troops around the world. May we never forget those who have given their lives so that we might live free.

Thanks for this post, Marci. We started off our day reading about Memorial Day and being thankful for my brother who has served for 20 years in the Navy. I see children of this generation losing an appreciation for military service and it makes me so sad.

I was humbled when our French NATO neighbor asked if I was going to any military celebrations Memorial Day weekend and I had to say no. We do need to remember amongst the picnics, beach trips, and festivals that men like Adam Brown, http://www.wtkr.com/news/wtkr-adam-brown-remembrance,0,2131820.story, gave the ultimate sacrifice.
