Back To School Lunch Plan and Ideas

August 15, 2011 by

This week is back to school week here at Overcoming Busy. On Friday, my son starts 1st grade at a nearby, very small Christian school and next Monday my daughter starts homeschooling 5th grade. Yes, we are living in both worlds. This is what my kids need right now.

One of the biggest challenges of my son going to school is that he has to bring a lunch every.single.day.  Add to that the fact my son is the picky eater of the family with some food sensitivities. Fun. I came up with a plan to make lunches not so traumatic for either of us. It might work with you and your kids, too!

The Plan

  • Team up with your kids to make a list of healthy foods that your kids will actually eat.
  • Work with your kids to make a balanced menu for the upcoming week.
  • Add your lunch choices to your grocery list the week/weekend before
  • Assemble and package what you can the night before
  • Be creative!

Lunch Ideas

I’ve been doing some research on lunch ideas. Here’s what I’ve come up with. You can see these and more on my lunch ideas for the kiddos Pinterest board.

Love the way this makes ordinary sandwiches not so ordinary.

I like the look of bento and bento-inspired lunch boxes. I think my son would, too. He likes things neat and orderly!

My kids love guacamole. I never thought of adding it to a boxes lunch like this one from www.anotherlunch.com.

Adorable notes like these will let my little man know I’m thinking of him!

What about you? Have any lunch packing advice for me?

  1. leftovers! if i make a dinner that i know my kids will eat, i’ll plan on making double and packaging it up for their lunch the next day. for instance, my kids love spaghetti, so i make sure to make extra to serve/pack for lunch the next day. :) thanks for your great ideas!
