Family Summer Reading Program

Family Summer Reading Program

This summer, instead of joining the traditional summer reading program at the local library or bookstore, we’ve decided to do a family reading program. We’ll still keep track of what we’ve read, but instead of attending a huge party with mostly strangers when reaching our goal, we’ve planned a fun family field trip.

We live in a community with many reading programs to choose from. They are all great and all have parties at the end for those who have met their reading goals. Too bad those parties weren’t the motivation my kids needed and, frankly, I didn’t want to go to the parties anyway, so I didn’t push the kids.

What does motivate my kids are field trips. So, we’ve decided to create our own reading program this summer. To make it more exciting, we are including the whole family! (My husband hasn’t exactly bought in yet, but I’m sure the kids will guilt him into it.)

We’ve set a 6 week period of time in which each of us has to read 20 minutes per day. We’ll record each person’s reading on our calendar. When we reach our goal, we’ll make a road trip to either the St. Louis Zoo or the St. Louis Science Center! If one of us doesn’t make the goal, we won’t go. This is going to be serious business.

What about you? Do your kids participate in a summer reading program?
